Rahul Gandhi meets Congress in Maharashtra

Mumbai: Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Friday listened to party workers' views on the functioning of the coalition government in Maharashtra.

At a meeting in the Tilak Bhavan at Dadar, the workers expressed themselves against any alliance with the Sharad Pawar-led NCP. Some Congress workers said that the Congress should go it alone, not only in the local bodies polls but also in the Assembly and general elections.

Another Congress worker said that Rahul Gandhi heard various suggestions and did not make any speech. There was also resentment at the non-performance of some Ministers in the State Cabinet. A worker said people did not name them, but spoke favourably of three Congress Ministers.

After some complaints of the non-functioning of the government, Rahul Gandhi defended Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, saying he knew him for long and he had done a good work.

A Congress worker told Rahul Gandhi that this government did not give priority to party members in the approval of works, and decisions were not taken soon.

Even at the first meeting, which Rahul Gandhi addressed in Bhaidas Hall, members of the Indian Youth Congress and the National Students Union of India raised concerns at the alliance with the NCP. The Congress General Secretary assured the delegates that he would dedicate more time to reviewing the working of the party at the grass roots.

Rahul Gandhi in Agra: Give us five years, development will be back in U.P

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi while addressing a mammoth Congress in the Taj City, Agra, had appealed the people to help Congress to form a Government in UP to transform the state.

The young Congress MP from Amethi alleged that non-Congress parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party make a number of promises but deliver nothing. "We (Congress) will not make promises but will work and show results," said Rahul Gandhi at a rally at the Kothi Meena Bazar ground.

"They had talked of India shining in 2004. Was India shining or Agra shining?" Rahul Gandhi asked and the big crowd responded with a roaring ‘no’. "If you want to hear promises, go to Mayawati or Mulayam Singh Yadav" Rahul Gandhi told the gathering.

Mulayam Singh Yadav had promised people in Bundelkhand that he would turn the backward region into Israel. In 22 years no power plants were set up while they promised free electricity. People have got bills but no electricity," said the Congress General Secretary taking at a dig at Mulayam Singh Yadav’s poll promises.

"Those with clear intentions don't need to make promises," repeated Rahul Gandhi. The Congress leader asked the gathering what had Agra got? "Nothing," the crowd roared back. "Agra is the Taj of the state and see how it has been ignored and has not benefited at all."

Rahul Gandhi then assured "Give us (Congress) five years. With your support, we will work for a better future."

Sonia Gandhi at the 105th birthday celebrations of Shivakumara Swami at Siddaganga Mutt in Bangalore

Congress President Sonia Gandhi attended the 105th birthday celebrations of the highly respected Lingayat seer Shivakumara Swami at 'Siddaganga mutt' at Tumkur in Bangalore, which is considered to be one of India's oldest religious institutions. “May Dr Shivakumara Swaijee continue to inspire lakhs and lakhs of people across the state, across the country and indeed across the world in the cause of education, social service, philanthropy and spirituality,” said Sonia Gandhi paying respects to the seer.
The Congress President added, “The primary education has been made a fundamental right. It is for all of us to ensure that this right is asserted and imposed so that all of India’s children from 6 to 14 receive free education”.
Striking an emotional chord with the people of Karnataka, Sonia Gandhi asserted that nothing exemplifies India’s diversity better than Karnataka itself, where people belonging to different culture, believing in different faith and speaking different languages have lived and worked for peace and harmony with each other.
Sonia Gandhi also asserted that education must inculcate respect for the wonderful diversities of our society. “It is this diversity that has given us strength. Beneath this diversity lays the continuity and unity of our great nation” stressed Sonia Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi: Congress is secular and will work for the entire people without any discrimination

Launching a blistering attack on caste based politics of the non-Congress parties like BSP, SP and BJP, Congress (I) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has said that people are now fed up with the identity politics. Casteist politics is inherently incapable of taking all the people together because it looks to serve only the interest of particular group of persons, said the young Congress MP from Amethi.

As such interests of only certain groups have been the concern of BJP, SP and BSP in the last 22 years, said Rahul Gandhi. Congress (I) believes in inclusive development which takes into account all the section of the people, said Rahul Gandhi adding that a comprehensive development cannot take place unless it is targeted at the people rather than on groups.

These non-Congress parties have had no vision, no agenda for the people of the state, said Rahul Gandhi. As such development of the state has languished, said the Congress leader. None of the governments of these parties solved the issues of the people. BJP only talked about religion while Mulayam Singh Yadav’s SP indulged in corruption. But BSP government of Mayawati turned out to be the worst, argued the Congress leader. Rahul Gandhi assured the people that Congress (I) being a secular party will work for people without any discrimination.
