Flaying Mayawati for claiming to be a leader of dalits and the poor but actually having done nothing for them, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has said on the contrary Congress (I) has brought welfare schemes for the people of Uttar Pradesh. Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) scheme provides minimum 100 days employment guarantee in rural areas, he said while campaigning for UP Assembly elections. It is a poverty-alleviation scheme for providing employment to the poor in their own villages. At Rs 120 per day x 100 days it works out to minimum Rs 12,000. This has given the poor employment, income and respectable status in society to the poor, said Rahul Gandhi adding that Mayawati had called MNREGA would not be useful for the poor. Similarly Janani Saurakha Yojana (Safe Motherhood Delivery) under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) provides for free institutional delivery of pregnant women plus monetary help of Rs 1400. Highlighting that her government looted the money for these schemes, he urged the people to show her the door. He promised that if Congress (I) is voted to power this time, it will ensure that the benefits of these schemes reach the poor.
