Congress’ upsurge a threat to BSP

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party Chief, Mayawati has been coming hard on the Congress recently in view of the oldest political party’s potential and possible revival in the state through the upcoming Assembly election.

The systematic campaign of Mayawati against the Congress is a sign that she is concerned at the prospect of the Congress hurting chances of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the January 2012 election.

Political observers are of the view that in the last Assembly election, Mayawati had put up a spectacular performance as she was successful in getting the support of the upper caste voters especially the Brahmins.

However, the Congress succeeded in attracting sections of the upper castes in the 2009 Lok Sabha election owing to aggressive campaigning and huge efforts by the Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi.

If the 2009 general elections were trailers of the much speculated change in the heartland of India, it can be substantiated only after the results of the upcoming UP elections are revealed.
