Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi along with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Vice President Ansari attended Dussehra celebrations at the famous Ramlila Maidan. In a symbolic gesture, Leaders took up bow and arrow in their hands and marked the beginning of the burning of effigies of Demon King Ravana, son Meghnath, and brother Kumbhakaran. Sonia Gandhi also attended Dussehra celebrations at the Subhash Maidan near Red Fort. At Delhi’s popular Ramlila Maidan and Subash Maidan tens of thousands of people converged on this occasion to witness one of the biggest commemorations of Dussehra. The Congress president had earlier greeted the people on Dussehra and wished that the festival brings peace, prosperity and progress throughout the country. Towering effigies of demon king Ravana along with his son Meghnad and brother Kumbhkaran were consigned to flames among splendid fireworks as people celebrated Dussehra across the city symbolising the triumph of good over evil. Dussehra coincided with the immersion of Durga idols in the Yamuna river, marking the end of the puja festival.
Dussehra also marked the beginning of a 20-day period that will culminate with Diwali, the festival of lights. Standing atop trucks, devotees and enthusiasts dressed as Ram, Ravana and their followers recreated the mythological war between Hindu god and the demon king depicted in the epic Ramayana.
Dussehra was celebrated with deep fervor and enthusiasm in different parts of Delhi and in other parts of the country on Sunday.
