PM, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi visit Rajesh Verma's residence in Muzaffarnagar (UP)

Muzaffarnagar: Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and party vice president and Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi visited riot-affected localities in Muzaffarnagar district on Monday. They visited some relief camps where riot-hit people are taking shelter. They were briefed about the situation in the district by the officers in-charge. They also visited the relief camps in Bassi Tala and Taawlil villages. They also visited journalist Rajesh Verma's home to meet the family members. Rajesh was killed in the riots.

Muzaffarnagar: Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh accompanied by Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress Vice President and Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi visited riot-affected localities in Muzaffarnagar district in  Uttar Pradesh on Monday.

PM, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi visited the relief camps set up in the riot-hit district and met riot victims.  Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi also interacted with the riot-victims at Vasipur Kalan. Prime Minister during a brief interaction with the media said that the Centre would extend all possible support to the state government to restore normalcy in the region. They also visiting some other riot-hit areas too during the visit.

A meeting of the National Integration Council (NIC) has also been convened on September 23 to discuss the increasing communal incidents.

The PM's scheduled visit to Muzaffarnagar and the NIC meeting which will be attended by all union ministers and chief ministers reflects the Centre's concern. The PM's last visit to riot-affected areas was in Assam last year.

Manmohan's visit to Muzaffarnagar comes a day after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav toured few of the riot-hit villages. However, wherever Akhilesh went, anger followed him. The CM promised government jobs and swift justice to the victims but got a tepid response from locals.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi while addressing the Parliament on the occasion of 60th Anniversary of the first sitting of Parliament of India said, “Sixty five years ago, India awakened to freedom with a bold and ambitious vision. A vision to build legislature on the basis of universal adult franchise. At one stroke millions of our poor and illiterate men and women were given the power to change their destiny. Let us not forget those troubled days and months and the numerous challenges the country faced then. Millions of refugees were homeless, communal tensions were rife, borders were tensed, resources were scarce. The very idea of a democratic India was being ridiculed in many quarters. When far older democracies had achieved universal adult franchise after long decades of struggle, how could it become a reality a nation beset with such problems. These questions were then asked. To their eternal credit and our undying gratitude our founding fathers persisted. The poor and illiterate masses of this country have turned out to be amazingly skilled and sophisticated. Again and again they have voted with wisdom, voted with purpose, sometimes reaffirming their faith in those governments , sometimes voting them out. And if there is one thread running through this past six decades, it is people's power which has been felt at the highest level of governance. The Aam admi has become the heart and the soul of our democracy. India's freedom struggle reinvented the idea of democracy. The notion of democracy said Gandhiji the father of our nation and the leader of our freedom struggle is that under it the weakest should have the same opportunity as the strongest. It is this revolutionary idea that opened the doors of our legislatures and began to transform the Indian society. It has done so in a peaceful and evolutionary manner based on the time tested principles of secularism and social justice.

Sonia Gandhi attends Dussehra celebrations at Subhash maidan, Delhi - 24th October 2012

On the occasion of Dussehra, Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, President Pranab Mukherjee and the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh attended the celebrations at the famous Subhash maidan. In a symbolic gesture, they took up bow and arrow in their hands and marked the beginning of the burning of effigies of Demon King Ravana, son Meghnath, and brother Kumbhakaran. Tens of thousands of people converged on this occasion to witness one of the biggest commemorations of Dussehra at Delhi's popular Ramlila Maidan and Subhash Maidan. The Congress President had earlier greeted the people on Dussehra and wished that the festival brings peace, prosperity and progress throughout the country. Towering effigies of demon king Ravana along with his son Meghnad and brother Kumbhkaran were consigned to flames among splendid fireworks as people celebrated Dussehra across the city symbolising the triumph of good over evil. Dussehra coincided with the immersion of Durga idols in the Yamuna river, marking the end of the puja festival. Dussehra was celebrated with deep fervour and enthusiasm in different parts of Delhi and in other parts of the country on Wednesday.

UPA is committed to the welfare of the weaker section of the society

The Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is committed to the welfare of the weaker section of the society, said Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The Congress leader was addressing a public rally in Tamil Nadu. The Centre has been sending huge funds under various schemes to ensure the benefit of the poor in the country, informed Sonia Gandhi.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, as UPA chairperson, was instrumental for the Right to Information and the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act which were the most acclaimed policies of the UPA 1 which had a great influence in UPA’s victory in the 2009 parliament elections. She was the chief advocate for the Right to Education Bill and now UPA is ready with the food Security bill, the brain child of Sonia Gandhi.
