The one towards truth is strong and not who has money, says Rahul at Barabanki

The AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi hours ago addressed hundreds of people at a poll rally at Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh. He is on a 5-day tour of the state. He spoke on many a problem the people of Uttar Pradesh have been facing under the ruling Mayawati government.

“I have quite old relations with Barabanki. Nehruji’s close aid and friend belonged from here. I came last time here and you made us win,” said the young Congress MP from Amethi.

After delivering his best in the inaugural poll rally at Phulpur more than a week ago, he has now spoken with strong words once again. He highlighted many problems of the UP people in the rally which saw mammoth turnout.

Rahul said, “The one who is towards truth is strong. Strength comes from people. Whichever government came here, it came up against people. They worked against the people. They were the government of the selected.”

Today’s programme of Rahul Gandhi’s campaign rally started with Barabanki. It has to be followed up to Ramnagar, Kesargunj and Bambi (Mehsi).

The young Congress leader has been successful in expressing his concerns over the various grave issues of the heartland state of India. He has done it again in a convincing way.

“Truth wins or money you will see. Workers are the spine of the Congress. Since 2004 the UPA government is at the centre of India’s progress. So much of money is there; there is no shortage of money. Problem is the money does not reach you.”

Rahul explained the usefulness and effectiveness of the MGNREGA. He said that the amount of Rs. 1,400 which every rural person should get under the scheme goes to the pockets of the bureaucrats, officers and middlemen.

“We brought the MGNREGA. In the MGNREGA, there is provision of guaranteeing 100 days employment which means Rs. 1,400 in a year. Where does the money go? It goes to the middleman, to the officers.”

He told the people there how the Mayawati government refused to accept the social welfare scheme and said that it was “not needed”. But, Rahul accepted the Act has not been successful in UP because of corruption.

“I went to the state’s Mayawati government proposing the law. The Chief Minister said it is not required in UP. Go wherever you want and ask the poor, they will answer till date no other social-welfare has been launched such as the MGNREGA. But if you ask someone in UP, they will say it hasn’t worked. It’s true there are no benefits out of it in UP.”

“Janani Surakhsha Yojna provides Rs. 1400 to (child bearing) woman. What happened? The money got siphoned off in the middle. In UP, woman gives birth to child every week. Rs. 60,000 was given to wave farmers’ debt. Future is yours, the poor’s.”

“If you talk about the weavers’ package, it was found out on query if it was given through society or committee nothing would be left for them. We changed the whole package. We decided to deposit the money directly into the weavers’ accounts. Weavers’ debt of Rs. 3000 crore was waved. They were issued credit cards. The interest rate given to the weavers is same as of farmers. You will see. The weavers will be benefited.”

“The Congress thinks of the future. Have you heard of the UID? There are several cards like Ration Card, voter ID, Driver’s License, etc. For one person there are multiple cards. We are making one card for one person. There will be one number for one person. What happens is there are different departments for different cards and the associated services. But we are merging them into one.”

“We won’t forget anyone. Loss is the most with you. See, Bangalore went ahead in IT. If you want to business in automobile industry, you can’t because Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra have gone ahead in automobile industry.”

“If it does not grow, you have to go to different regions all across India. Since the ruling state government, there have been problems of electricity and water. They have not done anything good or substantial for the state in the last 20 years, and they’ll continue to the same.”

On asking one Asha Ram Verma in the Barabanki meeting how and what he felt on hearing Rahul, he said, “I liked Rahul’s speech. He has spoken what he should spoke. If his government comes (in the state) he will really make things better.”

There were many distressed faces in the first day of Rahul’ rally and they came for hope. An NSUI member Fahad Jamal said, “No development work in UP. Only parks have been built in Lucknow. Electricity problem is there and roads are not good.”

An aged person Gowind Rawat told how even government hospitals indulge in corrupt practices. He said, “No treatment is there. Whenever he took one of his kin there, she could not be treated. Moreover, bribe of Rs. 50 is to be given for treatment. I hope if Rahul Gandhi’s government (i.e. Congress’ government comes to power, everything will be OK.”

“We have to move together. We have to fight together. And you have to make Congress win,” said the young Gandhi at the end of his speech at Barabanki.

On the very first day of the UP tour, Rahul Gandhi has spoken very well on the common man’s issue – the issue of the poor.
