Latest news - Rahul Gandhi : Uttar Pradesh is ruled by mafia and criminals

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi kick-started the election campaign for Congress today for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections addressing a huge rally at Phulpur which has been the constituency of country’s first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru. Today is the 122nd birth anniversary of Pt. Nehru.

The party has finalized the slogan Utho, Jaago, Badlo and also will give a punch line in all their campaign materials ‘Jawab Hum Denge”. Rahul Gandhi will be spearheading the Congress campaign in the state for the 'Mission UP-2012'. In the last Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, Rahul Gandhi had led the Congress campaign and the party could do a morale boosting performance.

The party will focus the issues of lawlessness, corruption, misrule and attacks on women and poor people under the Mayawati Government. The campaign will also be focused to highlight the poor record of non-Congress governments on development, crime, opportunities for youth and farmers' issues.

Rahul Gandhi during his address in Phulpur highlighted the bad state of affairs under the Mayawati Government in the state. This is the Constituency of Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru who showed Uttar Pradesh the path of development said Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi starting his address. “There was a time when Uttar Pradesh showed the entire nation the path of development. But today the entire nation is moving ahead, but U.P goes back wards. The state of U.P is ruled by the mafia and criminals” said Rahul Gandhi. “I am in politics for the past seven years and I visited many places in U.P. Experience taught me that unless a leader goes to the people, he cannot understand the problems of the common man. Unless you drink the water from a poor man’s home and get sick, you will not realize the real hardship of a common man. Unless a leader goes t a poor man’s house, he cannot be angry after seeing the pathetic living conditions” added Rahul Gandhi. There was a time when both Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav used to be angry thinking of peoples problems, but today they forgot the common people and are now bothered about only power, quipped Rahul Gandhi.

“Till we include the common man in the process of development, we cannot progress” said the Congress General Secretary. He also shared his experiences during his visit to Bundelkhand. “UPA Government at the centre brought the MGNREGA scheme to guarantee jobs for the common aam aadmi. Centre also sends huge amount of financial assistance to the state under this scheme. But in Bundelkhand, no one knows about this NREGA policy even. The crore of rupees sent by the Centre is being misused by the BSP Government. The money falls in the pockets of the BSP leaders and as a result poor man gets nothing” said Rahul Gandhi. The money sanctioned by the Centre for various projects are not reaching the people, blamed Rahul Gandhi. “I feel angry to see the bad state of affairs in Uttar Pradesh” he added.

People from Uttar Pradesh migrate to other places like Mumbai, Haryana and Delhi for job. They contribute towards the development of those places. “Why they have to leave U.P? Why can’t those people remain here and contribute to the state’s development” asked Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi also explained about the Bhatta-Parsaul incidents where the poor villagers were assaulted by the police and the atrocities against the women. Rahul Gandhi said that the U.P. Government forcefully acquired the lands of the poor villagers and farmers without giving the adequate compensation sold it to big real estate corporates. “No one from the Government took the pain to visit Bhatta-Parsaul to realize the hardship he added. But the Central Government understood the gravity of the situation and drafted a Land Acquisition bill in 52 days. But some opposition political parties are opposing this but the Centre is determined to bring that bill for the benefit of the poor villagers” said Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi also emphasized that the UPA Government is committed to introduce the Food Security Bill to ensure food to all and a strong Lokpal Bill to curb corruption. “But after introducing the food security bill, I am not sure whether the U.P. Government will provide food to all or it will go to only BSP leaders, ministers and criminals” he added taking a dig at the BSP rule.

“Congress is the only party that thinks and works for the development. Congress is the party that always looks for the better future” Rahul Gandhi underlined. He said that Rs. 7000 crore was sanctioned by the Centre to promote Dalit entrepreneurship and also hinted about the Rs. 3000 crore assistance for the weavers. Nobody can save U.P unless the people in the state thinks for a change reminded Rahul Gandhi. People are fed-up with Governments which divides the state in the name of caste or religion. “What we need is a Government of the common man. The state cannot progress till we have a Government of ‘aam aadmi’ “ said Rahul Gandhi.

He lashed out at the Mayawati Government saying that the Government is deep-necked in corruption. “The ministers are in jail, corruption is everywhere. Even if you want to file a FIR in a police station, you will have to bribe the police. No development is happening in the state for the past 20 years” he added. It is the responsibility of the youth to think about a change in the state, he said further.

Rahul Gandhi told the people to change the thought process to change the Government so that state can be developed further.
