Latest news - Rahul Gandhi airs his concern in the lack of development in Nagaland

Rahul Gandhi, the Congress General Secretary and in-charge of Youth Congress and NSUI visited Nagaland on Wednesday to boost the YC membership. At a public meeting in Nagaland's commercial hub Dimapur, Congress General Secretary on Wednesday said that it was in everybody’s interest to have a stable and peaceful Nagaland.
Rahul Gandhi also aired his concern in the lack of development in Nagaland and on the fact that 70% of its people are living under poverty. "The UPA government has been pumping money into Nagaland but there's no development. The roads are pathetic and the funds are not reaching the people, and as a consequence most of the people are poor," said Rahul Gandhi.
“It was very unfortunate to learn that Nagaland was moving backward when the country was marching ahead even though a great deal of funds were pouring into the State from the UPA government under various flagship programmes” said Rahul Gandhi.
“Altogether 93 per cent of the Nagaland’s budget was provided by the Centre but it was not reaching people due to inefficiency and corruption. It is your money, it is for your development,” he said at the Dimapur stadium during his maiden visit to the State.
Rahul Gandhi also appealed to the youth to join the Youth Congress and NSUI. “The young people are reluctant to join politics because of the way today politics is done in this country, but we have to change this system” he commented. “And, for that to happen that the youth must join politics to bring inclusive development in this country” he also urged the people to be vigilant on how money was spent by the State government. Rahul Gandhi, referring to poor condition of roads in the state, said that physical and social infrastructure had to be built.
Rahul Gandhi also inaugurated the auditorium of a Nagaland University campus at Mokokchung town in the eastern part of the state. Congress General Secretary held a student interaction session at the Nagaland University at Lumami in Zhunheboto district. He addressed leaders and members of Youth Congress and NSUI at Town Hall.
Earlier, Congress General Secretary paid homage to Bhupen Hazarika at his Nizarapar residence. Rahul Gandhi who was on his way from Dimapur, made a brief stopover and spent about 20 minutes with Hazarika's family and garlanded his portrait. Rahul Gandhi spoke to Hazarika's son, Tez and the long-time partner of the cultural icon, Kalpana Lajmi.
