It is Congress (I) achievement - a new Land Acquisition Bill

It is Congress (I) which has recently introduced a new Land Acquisition Bill in the Parliament to replace the old colonial Land Acquisition Act of nineteenth century. The Bill was pending over a decade. Congress (I) said from 1998 to 2004 BJP-led NDA government was in power but it did not do anything on the subject. BJP-led government was more interested in corruption than in solving issues facing the country of which land acquisition was one. While land is a state subject some corrupt governments like one of Mayawati’s government in Uttar Pradesh continued with old British land acquisition act and forcibly acquired poor farmers land. As a result there were lots of anti-acquisition agitations in Uttar Pradesh. On the other hand progressive states like Haryana under Congress (I) leadership introduced farmers’ pro land acquisition policy. Now to ensure uniform availability of progressive legislation on the subject, Congress (I) has brought the new Land Acquisition Bill to provide much needed relief to the poor farmers.
