Congress (I) says it is paradoxical but true that Uttar Pradesh government is being run by a woman yet women are not safe in the state. Mayawati claims that her government represents ‘Dalits’ but women from ‘Dalit’ community and those from other backward and minority community are the worst sufferers. It’s very distressing that a woman heading the state does not mull over the fact that despite her being a Dalit, this category of women are the ones regularly victimised,” said Congress (I) spokesman. Statistics furnished by the State government discloses that of the 1,290 rape cases that took place in Uttar Pradesh last year, 588 were of Dalits. Significantly, Dalits form about 22 per cent of the population but the crimes against Dalit women as a proportion of total crimes is far greater. Congress (I) says that the chief minister is not embarrassed by sexual crime figures against her own community.
